Alternative methods of feeding newborns and infants
Babies who cannot suckle, temporarily or permanently, are fed in a way that best suits their needs. The choice of the most appropriate method is assessed individually, for each mother and child.
What does breastmilk contain?
There is nothing like the composition of breastmilk! Human milk is a complex living substance capable of change, which follows, supports and directs the child's development. There is no substitute for breastmilk. It contains thousands of different ingredients, and most of them ingredients cannot be artificially produced.
Flat or inverted nipples
About 10% of first-time breastfeeding women have flat or inverted nipples, which is a consequence of insufficient elasticity of the muscle tissue that raises the nipple. It is impossible to assess how the nipple will function during breastfeeding based on its appearance alone.
Smoking tobacco while breastfeeding
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are the periods of your life when you should by all means try to quit smoking. If you fail, your milk is still the best food for your baby and you should breastfeed.
Breast engorgement and clogged milk ducts
Some mothers have more milk than the baby can suckle, so they are more likely to have engorged breasts and at a higher risk of having clogged milk ducts. This is temporary, and milk "supply" and "demand" will soon balance out.
Thrush (candidiasis)
Thrush or candidiasis is a fungal disease that most often occurs in a child's mouth. It is common in the first year of life and is usually not a reason for concern.
